Joseph Conrad

Joseph Conrad in 1904
Birth Date:
Death Date:

Born Józef Teodor Konrad Korzeniowski, Conrad was born in Poland but was granted British nationality in 1886. He novels are filled with anti-heroic characters often in a nautical setting, derived from his background as a merchant-marine. During his lifetime, Conrad was plagued by poverty and ill-health, both mental and physical. The critical reception of his works was not positive during his lifetime, due in part to his tendency to set his novels at sea or in exotic locales rather than the more easily relatable Britain like his contemporaries.
