The Great Gatsby

Set in the fictional town of West Egg on Long Island, The Great Gatsby was inspired by the decadent parties F. Scott Fitzgerald attended while visiting Long Island in 1923. The novel follows the story of mysterious millionaire Jay Gatsby as he pursues his passion for the beautiful Daisy Buchanan. Their love story is narrated by a third party, Nick Carraway, who moves in next door to Gatsby and it gradually admitted into his eccentric neighbor's inner life. Initially, the novel was received poorly by the public, and when Fitzgerald died in 1940 he considered it a failure. However, since then The Great Gatsby has come to be considered one of the great American 20th century novels, even widely making it into highschool curriculums accross the country.
